Messerschmitt 109 E Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra Battle of Britian
Franz Von Werra was “The One Who Got Away”, the subject of a best-seller and two movies. He was a German ace whose escape exploits were far more exciting than his brief career as a fighter pilot.
Captured by the Brits in September 1940, von Werra repeatedly escaped his captors through bluffs and disguises. Recaptured and shipped to Canada with other German POW’s, von Werra jumped from a moving POW train southwest of Montreal. There he headed for the neutral United States. Unbelievably, after crossing the frozen river near Ogdensburg, NY, he turned himself in to the first policeman he found. American reporters, charmed by “Baron” von Werra’s bravado and fluent English, turned his exciting escapade into headlines across the USA and Germany. The German Consul in NY assisted von Werra with his return to Germany. After receiving a hero’s welcome from the motherland, Hitler awarded him the Knight’s Cross. Wanting to continue his service to Germany, he joined the invasion of Russia and ran his score to 21 victories. In October 1941, off the Dutch coast, von Werra’s luck ran out when his engine failed and Franz von Werra plunged into the North Sea.
