 FW190A-4 3./JG.5, Orel, 1943 (Leutnant Josef Jennewein)
Born on November 21 1919, Josef “Pepi” Jennewein initially achieved fame as a world champion skier. However, he’s also perhaps better remembered as a Luftwaffe ace in WWII. He flew 271 missions and achieved 86 victories, nearly all of them on the Eastern Front. Oberfeldwebel Jennewein disappeared after force-landing his Fw 190A-6 behind Russian lines in July 1943, and was later posthumously awarded the Ritterkreuz.
Dragon Warbirds has reproduced one of the aircraft that contributed to his remarkably high tally of aerial victories. The aircraft is a Focke-Wulf 190A-4, of which 976 were built between June 1942 and March 1943. The Fw 190 was well-liked by its pilots, and at the time of its introduction in 1941, this Luftwaffe workhorse fighter was considered superior to the Spitfire Mk. V. It was so effective that more than 20,000 were eventually manufactured (including 6000 fighter-bombers). Dragon Warbirds’ new 1/72 scale die-cast replica portrays an aircraft of 3./JG.51 flown by then Leutnant Jennewein. The Fw 190A-4 carries a superbly painted two-color summer camouflage scheme used at this time in June 1943 in the region of Orel on the Eastern Front. The distinctive “5” is finely displayed on the fuselage sides. All details on this fine work of art are sharply rendered, and the sleek lines of the Fw 190 are captured to perfection. Dragon Warbirds is proud to present this model of a world champion skier and famous Luftwaffe ace!
